SENATOR ALEXIS CALATAYUD

A Leader Committed to South Florida’s Future

Senator Alexis Calatayud was elected to the Florida Senate in 2022 at the age of 29, becoming one of the youngest individuals to ever serve in the chamber. A lifelong advocate for education and opportunity, Alexis has spent more than a decade working in policy, advocacy, and community engagement to deliver results for Florida families.

Currently, Alexis serves as the Community Engagement & Public Policy Liaison for the Miami-Dade & Monroe County Early Learning Coalition, where she has launched national learning exchanges and built innovative initiatives to expand access to early childhood education.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Alexis served as Legislative Affairs Director at the Florida Department of Education, where she led efforts to advocate for Florida’s students and safeguard the future of the education system.

 

A Miami native, Alexis graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Political Science.

In the Senate, she serves as Vice Chair of the PreK-12 Education Committee and Chair of the Postsecondary Education Committee, roles that allow her to continue shaping policies that strengthen Florida’s education system, expand opportunity, and prepare the next generation for success.

From historic education investments to major cost-of-living relief and environmental protections, her work reflects a clear commitment to responsible, forward-looking leadership.

Lowering Costs & Property Insurance Reform

  • Passed bipartisan reforms to stabilize Florida’s property insurance market, helping protect homeowners from crushing rate hikes.

  • Cracked down on fraudulent roof claims and stopped insurers from dropping families immediately after hurricanes.

  • Secured $711,000,000 dedicated to expanding affordable housing programs and reducing hidden costs for working families.

Education & Workforce

  • $20.9 billion investment in all-time high PreK-12 education funding.

  • $1.3 billion investment into all-time high public teacher salary increases statewide.

  • $8.9 billion expanded access to career and technical education so students can train for high-demand jobs with confidence their education leads to real careers.)

  • Championed expanded parental choice, giving Miami-Dade families more flexibility to find the best school option for their children.

Protecting Our Environment & Quality of Life

  • Sponsored $20 million in investments to keep Biscayne Bay and our waterways clean.

  • Delivered funding for parks and green spaces, including $300,000 for Cutler Bay Bel-Aire Park and $600,000 for Deering Estate Foundation Pavilions.

  • Passed legislation to crack down on illegal dumping and strengthen South Florida conservation measures.

Police & Public Safety

  • Secured $250,000 in funding for local police departments to improve equipment and training including the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office for Global Events and Felony Trespass.

  • Sponsored measures to combat rising auto thefts and organized retail crime.

  • Strengthened penalties for violent offenders and prioritized initiatives that keep our neighborhoods safe.

Balanced Budgets, Responsible Spending

While the county faces deficits and cuts to essential services, Alexis helped pass a balanced state budget for the third year in a row — without raising taxes.

Key investments include:

  • $15.9 billion for K-12 public schools

  • $1.36 billion for teacher and instructional pay raises (+$101.6M over last year)

  • $726.9 million for workforce education (CTE, apprenticeships, nursing)

  • $1.4 billion for Everglades restoration and water quality projects

  • $15.1 billion for transportation and infrastructure improvements

  • $2 billion in tax relief, including sales tax holidays and business rent tax repeal

  • Record reserves of $15.7 billion (Rainy Day Fund at a record $4.9 billion)

Alexis delivered millions in direct funding for Miami-Dade, including:
 

  • Flood mitigation and stormwater drainage projects in Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, and the City of Miami

    • $500,000 for Palmetto Bay Stormwater Drainage

    • $400,000 for City of Miami Drainage Improvement

    • $375,000 for Pinecrest Stormwater Improvements

  • $600,000 in funding expanding senior services, including cancer support programs
    Resources for cultural, educational, and workforce development programs

  • $90 million to support local cultural, educational, and workforce development programs

  • Investments in public safety, including fire suppression training and equipment.

    • $650,000 for Miami-Dade Fire Suppression Tanker

    • $240,000 for Miami-Dade Fire Suppression Training Prop
